These waters are controlled by the Wye Board of Conservators (Secretary, Major F. A. Phillips, 46 Commercial Street, Hereford), who issue licences at the following rates : salmon, whole district (season) 6o/-, (any period after June 30) 40/-, (14 days) 20/- ; Wye above junction with Elan, and tributaries above Builth, salmon (season) 3o/- ; trout (season) 2/6, (3o days) t/- ; coarse fish only (season) i /-. Licences, which are indispensable, can be obtained from local tacklists and from most post-offices. Close seasons are (salmon) October 24 to January 25, (trout) October 2 to February 14, (coarse fish) none.

The Wye from Rhayader downwards is to-day perhaps the finest salmon river in England and Wales, and many of its tributaries, as well as the main stream, give the trout-fisher abundant sport. The coarse fish include pike, chub and dace : some of the pike caught are of remarkable size.

For the upper part of the valley, Llangurig and Rhayader are the best centres. Both the Llangurig hotels have some miles of trout-fishing. Rhayader is of interest to anglers because of its proximity to the Elan Valley Reservoirs (tickets for the latter are issued at 2/6 a day, also by the week or month, at the Penralley Estate Offices, Rhayader). Splendid trout-fishing here.

Below Rhayader most of the salmon-fishing is reserved by the riparian owners, but with this exception mixed fishing of the best type may be obtained by application to the principal hotels or to local associations. Among the most noted anglers' resorts may be mentioned Newbridge-on-Wye (for Wye and Ithon) ; Llandrindod Wells (Ithon ; apply Rock Park Hotel or local A.A.) ; Pen-y-bont (Ithon ; apply " Severn Arms") ; Builth Wells (Wye) ; Llangammarch and Llanwrtyd Wells (Irfon ; excellent trout-fishing, with some salmon, obtainable from any of the hotels) ; Aberedw (leave for trout-fishing in the Edw easily obtained) ; and Hay (good mixed fishing, some free).

The excellent fishing facilities at Hereford and other important centres of the lower Wye Valley are summarized in later sections of this Guide (see pp. 41 and 62). Further details concerning fishing in the Wye generally, and particulars of salmon beats to let, may be obtained by writing to Messrs. Hatton Bros., tacklists, 14 St. Peter's Street, Hereford.
